Foods That Naturally Reduce Blood Clotting

Certain foods and herbs naturally support healthy blood flow and reduce excessive clotting, what Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) might describe as promoting smooth Qi and Blood movement.

1. Omega-3–Rich Foods

Omega-3 fatty acids help prevent platelets from clumping together excessively.

Examples: Wild salmon, sardines, mackerel, flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts.

TCM view: Nourish Blood and Yin, soften vessels, and calm internal heat.

Tip: 2–3 servings per week of fatty fish or a tablespoon of ground flaxseed daily supports circulation.

2. Tomatoes and Tomato Products

Contain lycopene and natural salicylates, which thin the blood slightly.

Examples: Fresh tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato juice.

TCM view: Clear heat, cool the blood, and move stagnation gently.

Tip: Cooking tomatoes with olive oil increases lycopene absorption.

3. Garlic and Onions

Garlic, onions, shallots, and leeks contain allicin and sulfur compounds that reduce platelet aggregation and improve vessel health.

TCM view: Move Qi and Blood, disperse stagnation, warm the middle.

Tip: Crush garlic and let it sit for 10 minutes before cooking to activate allicin.

4. Citrus Fruits

Oranges, lemons, and grapefruit contain vitamin C, flavonoids, and salicylates that support vessel elasticity and inhibit clot formation.

TCM view: Move Liver Qi, promote fluid movement, and clear phlegm that may slow circulation.

Note: Grapefruit can interact with certain medications, check with your healthcare provider if you’re on prescription blood thinners.

5. Berries and Dark-Colored Fruits

Blueberries, grapes, pomegranates, and cherries contain polyphenols and anthocyanins that reduce oxidative stress and support vascular health.

TCM view: Nourish Blood and Yin, strengthen vessels, and cool internal heat.

6. Green Tea and Turmeric

Green tea contains catechins that mildly inhibit clot formation. Turmeric (curcumin) is a powerful anti-inflammatory and natural anticoagulant.

TCM view: Turmeric (Jiang Huang) moves Blood and relieves stagnation; green tea clears heat and lightens the spirit.

Tip: Combine turmeric with black pepper and a little fat (like coconut oil) to improve absorption.

7. Leafy Greens (with Care)

Kale, spinach, and Swiss chard are excellent for vessel health but high in vitamin K, which promotes clotting. If you take a blood thinner like warfarin, keep vitamin K intake consistent rather than avoiding it entirely.

8. Nuts, Seeds, and Olive Oil

These contain natural vitamin E and healthy fats that protect blood vessel walls and reduce platelet stickiness.

Examples: Almonds, sunflower seeds, hazelnuts, olive oil.

TCM view: Nourish Yin, moisten dryness, and calm internal wind.

9. Spices That Improve Circulation

Ginger, cinnamon, and cayenne stimulate blood flow and open vessels.

Tip: A little daily (in tea, oatmeal, or smoothies) is better than large amounts occasionally.

If you’re on prescription anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, Eliquis, Xarelto, or Plavix), discuss dietary changes with your healthcare provider — these foods can amplify medication effects and may need consistency or moderation.
